Your value should not come from others.

As humans, we often want to be in control of everything – our clothes, friends, food, bodies, hair, relationships, politics – you name it.

However, we also put a lot of value in things that we cannot control, such as people’s reactions, thoughts, opinions, or feelings. Even if we have good intentions, we need to accept that some people may not like or respect us, and that is okay. We don’t have to hate them or call them out.

We simply need to recognize that with so many different people in the world, it’s natural that some people won’t get along. It’s important to treat everyone with love and respect, but we don’t have to be everyone’s pillar of support.

We should choose wisely the relationships we invest in, but also realize that we should not place our value in other people’s opinions. We should take criticism seriously and analyze it to see if there’s something we can learn from it. We can value other people’s opinions and praise without letting them dictate how we see ourselves.

Sometimes, people attribute so much of themselves to their work, family, or job that it becomes a part of who they are. This may be good from a creative standpoint, but it can be extremely harmful because instead of viewing their work as an extension of themselves, they view it as who they are.

This causes many professionals to take criticism as an attack on themselves rather than advice on how to improve. We should not allow people who are out of our control to be the sole indicator of how we feel about ourselves.

However, we should still listen to others’ advice because that’s how we can grow. If we never get any negative feedback, it means nobody is listening to us. Our validation should come from how we feel about what we do, and others’ words are another avenue that we can use to see what it’s like from an outsider’s perspective. This allows us to better ourselves and our craft

. We are worth so much more than a business, degree, job, or relationship. Let our work be an extension of us but remember that we are so much more than what we do.
